Engineering Resilience

Park Avenue Pump Station

Inside the Park Avenue Pump Station rehabilitation.

At Jones & Henry Engineers, we take pride in our commitment to enhancing municipal infrastructure, ensuring safety, reliability, and sustainability in our communities. One such endeavor was the Park Avenue Pump Station Rehabilitation in Mansfield, Ohio, authorized by Mansfield’s city council in April 2019 and completed two years later. The critical municipal project highlights how targeted engineering upgrades can revitalize aging assets, safeguard public health, and extend the lifespan of a city’s vital wastewater network.

The Challenge: Aging Municipal Infrastructure

Located at 480 Park Avenue East, the Park Avenue Pump Station serves as a critical artery for Mansfield’s wastewater and sanitary sewer system. Over decades of continuous operation, crucial components had reached the end of their reliable service life.

Faced with aging machinery and escalating maintenance demands, the City of Mansfield needed a comprehensive overhaul. The goal wasn’t just a quick patch; it was a resilient modern upgrade to secure the station’s operational efficiency for decades to come.

As part of Mansfield’s broader $10 million sewer and wastewater improvement initiative, the City tapped Jones & Henry to deliver a phased engineering design.

A Deep-Dive Infrastructure Overhaul

Jones & Henry approached the rehabilitation from the inside out, addressing critical mechanical, electrical, and structural vulnerabilities. Our design team conducted a comprehensive evaluation, including electrical assessments, phased improvements, and structural reviews, to effectively address the station’s needs. Working closely with city officials and stakeholders ensured that our approach was aligned with the City’s objectives.

The project included a comprehensive overhaul of the electrical infrastructure, which involved the complete replacement of motor control centers, standby generators, and instrumentation systems. This upgrade significantly enhanced operational reliability and ensured compliance with the latest safety standards.

In addition to the electrical improvements, all internal piping, valves, and appurtenances were replaced, and a new influent screen was installed. These enhancements were vital for efficient wastewater management and helped minimize the risk of mechanical failures.

Our team also concentrated on critical structural repairs to the wet well and its surrounding facilities. These enhancements were essential not just for preventing catastrophic failures but also for ensuring compliance with stringent environmental regulations.

The Impact

The rehabilitation project successfully achieved several major milestones by modernizing the control systems and strengthening the station’s structural heart. One of the key improvements is enhanced reliability: the installation of a new standby generator and updated electrical systems ensures the station remains operational during severe weather and power outages.

Additionally, operational efficiency has been significantly boosted through the introduction of new automated influent screens, which not only reduce the need for manual labor but also help prevent system clogs. Furthermore, the project prioritized environmental safety by upgrading piping and performing structural repairs, which significantly reduces the risk of sanitary sewer overflows, thereby protecting Ohio’s local waterways.

Building for the Future

The Park Avenue Pump Station project proves that smart reinvestment in existing infrastructure is one of the most cost-effective ways for cities to build long-term resilience. The total construction cost of the rehabilitation project was approximately $4,054,121, a worthwhile investment for the City’s long-term sustainability. By modernizing this vital infrastructure, Jones & Henry fostered resilience against future challenges and ensured that the City can efficiently manage wastewater for years to come.
