Small Steps, Big Impact

Pollution Prevention Week

Celebrating National Pollution Prevention Week 2026.

The third full week of September marks the return of National Pollution Prevention Week. Running from September 21 through September 27, this year’s theme is a powerful reminder of our collective responsibility: “A Better Tomorrow Starts with Pollution Prevention Today.”

While large-scale industrial changes are essential, pollution prevention—or P2—begins at home. Unlike traditional environmental efforts that focus on cleaning up waste after it is created, P2 focuses on eliminating waste at the source. It is about making smarter, more proactive choices in our everyday routines to prevent pollution before it starts.

This week, you can make a meaningful impact on your local environment with some simple yet powerful actions. First, rethink your lawn care practices by skipping heavy chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Instead, focus on natural composting methods or opt for native plants that thrive without chemical assistance.

When it comes time to wash your car, avoid doing it in your driveway. Washing your vehicle at home can send soapy, grime-filled runoff directly into local storm drains and waterways, harming the environment. Instead, choose a commercial car wash, as these businesses are required to treat and recycle their wastewater.

Additionally, it’s important to watch for any leaks in your vehicle. Check for fluid leaks and address them promptly, as rain can easily wash oil and coolant off the pavement and into our shared water supply.

Take a few minutes to clear the storm drains on your street, too. Keeping them free of leaves, grass clippings, and litter will ensure that clean water flows smoothly and can help prevent flooding in your neighborhood.

Lastly, don’t forget to properly dispose of any chemicals you may have lying around, such as old paints, cleaners, and automotive fluids. Instead of throwing these items in the trash or pouring them down the drain, find a local household hazardous waste collection site to dispose of them safely . By taking these small steps, you can significantly contribute to the health of our local ecosystems.

Pollution prevention isn’t about completely changing your lifestyle overnight. It is about minor adjustments to our daily habits that add up to cleaner air, safer water, and healthier communities. Let’s work together this week to build a better tomorrow.
