Celebrating remarkable journeys and looking forward to a bright future.
As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial) of the Declaration of Independence this year, Jones & Henry is also celebrating its own 100-year milestone. Reflecting on our history since 1926, we’ve been considering the rich narratives of both our nation and our company. One significant event to note is the country’s 150th anniversary, which was celebrated in 1926 with great fanfare at the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition in Philadelphia.
The landmark exposition, held from May 31 to November 30, 1926, attracted around 6.5 million visitors. It celebrated not only the signing of the Declaration of Independence but also the 50th anniversary of the first World’s Fair, held in 1876 in Philadelphia—a fitting homage to the nation’s evolving legacy.
Among the many impressive features of the exposition was an impressive 80-foot illuminated replica of the Liberty Bell, a symbol of American independence. Adorned with a dazzling 26,000 light bulbs, the eye-catching installation lit up the night sky and served as a beacon of national pride. The fair also included military flyovers, a recreated 1776 “High Street,” and various exhibits showcasing the nation’s achievements and aspirations.
To further commemorate the significant occasion, Congress authorized the creation of special commemorative coins, including $2.50 gold quarter eagles and silver half dollars. Featuring prominent figures such as Presidents George Washington and Calvin Coolidge, the coins serve as tangible reminders of a significant period in American history.
Unfortunately, the 1926 Sesqui-Centennial was not without its challenges. Early financial issues plagued the event, and inclement weather affected attendance. But despite its obstacles, the Sesqui-Centennial International Exposition stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of the American spirit.
