Aaron J. Davenport, PE, Senior Vice President and Kalamazoo Office Director for Jones & Henry Engineers, has coauthored an article for Michigan Water Works News, the official magazine of the Michigan Section of the American Water Works Association. The article, “The Rehabilitation of Battle Creek’s Verona Wellfield: How a Hunch, Operator Experience, Investigation, & Regulatory Transparency Led to the Largest Wellfield Rehabilitation Project in State History,” is the cover story for the publication’s winter edition.

The feature, written along with Perry Hart, Utility Administrator for the City of Battle Creek, Michigan, describes Battle Creek’s Verona Wellfield Project. The wellfield, the City’s primary water supply for over a century, has been particularly susceptible to contamination due to an adjacent Superfund Site. Operating on a hunch, the City discovered significant defects in the well casings and worked with Jones & Henry to begin the production wells replacement process. The resulting rehabilitation project is the largest in Michigan history.

Jones & Henry is part of the extensive undertaking that has become a model for interagency cooperation. It involves a complex group of stakeholders focused on protecting the public health and safety at all costs. Work should conclude by the end of 2025.
