Robert McGowan

Combining extensive professional experience with a diverse personal background, Rob McGowan emphasizes the importance of continuous personal growth.

As a Construction Services Specialist, Rob McGowan serves as a Resident Project Representative (RPR). In that role, he serves as Jones & Henry Engineers’ representative on job sites, witnessing projects to ensure work proceeds according to the plans and specifications. As the primary liaison between the contractor and project engineers, Rob functions as Jones & Henry’s “eyes and ears,” providing on-hand oversight that would be impossible to manage from a distance.

”I often say I get paid to watch other people work,” quips Rob. By observing daily activities and verifying compliance with contract documents, he can identify potential issues early and help to avoid costly and time-consuming problems down the road.

Personal Background and Influences

Rob was born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, with an upbringing significantly shaped by his family dynamics and the diverse educational environment he experienced. Growing up with two older sisters, he enjoyed a stable home life supported by a nurturing stay-at-home mother and a caring father.

That foundation provided Rob with a strong sense of support and a sense of belonging. Furthermore, the schools in Lansing where he attended were notable for their efforts to promote racial balance, as the district bused students between urban and suburban schools. Rob says the experience exposed him to a variety of social and economic backgrounds. Such diverse experiences had a profound impact on his worldview, ultimately influencing the person he would become.

Rob pursued higher education at Lansing Community College, where he obtained an Associate’s Degree. To finance his studies, he landed a co-op position with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), marking the beginning of his professional journey in the engineering sector. After two and a half decades with a multi-disciplinary engineering firm in Lansing, Rob transitioned to his current role at Jones & Henry.

In his early adulthood, Rob was actively involved in his church community, where he served as a volunteer youth leader, focusing on setting a positive example for younger members. However, differing views on church practices, particularly around tithing, led Rob to step away from organized religion. Today, he identifies as a former conservative Christian who has since adopted a more liberal perspective.

“I understand that religion and politics can be polarizing,” he says. “But I continue to maintain my Christian morals and a commitment to doing what is right.”

Passions and Pursuits Beyond Work

Outside of his professional life, Rob is passionate about photography. His love for the craft began in junior high with his first point-and-shoot camera, and he has since invested in professional equipment as digital photography became more accessible. What started as a hobby has evolved into a side business, where he offers photography services and high-quality prints, showcasing his artistic talents.

Rob is also an enthusiast for new experiences, striving to find a different hobby each year. From purchasing and learning to ride a motorcycle to indulging in sports such as indoor soccer, downhill skiing, and snowboarding, he embraces the joy of exploration and physical activity.

Despite his reserved demeanor in unfamiliar settings, Rob’s bubbly personality often shines through, and he uses humor to uplift those around him. He values honesty and promotes open communication, choosing not to wear sunglasses on job sites so people can see his eyes. “I want to look people straight in the eye when talking to them.”

Rob McGowan exemplifies a balance between professionalism and personal passion, capturing the essence of a versatile individual dedicated to both his career and personal growth.

“I believe that everyone is a product of their environment,” he says. “My diverse background has not only molded my character but has also fueled my desire to connect with others from all walks of life.”

As he continues to embrace new challenges and adventures, Rob remains focused on leaving a positive impact, both in his professional endeavors and in the lives of those he encounters. His story is a testament to the power of adaptability, the value of open dialogue, and the relentless pursuit of personal growth and enrichment.

I often say I get paid to watch other people work.
