Matt Galovan

Matt Galovan is blending his passion for statistics with a spirit of adventure and a love for exploration.

Matt Galovan began 2026 by joining Jones & Henry Engineers in the Kalamazoo office. As a modeling technician, he brings valuable experience in the growing field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), an essential tool for modern engineering.

GIS utilizes spatial analysis and mapping technologies to address complex engineering challenges. It allows professionals to visualize, analyze, and manage location-based data for various applications, including infrastructure projects, urban planning, and environmental management. GIS will assist Jones & Henry in exploring the creation of digital twins and models of wastewater treatment plants and other systems to optimize treatment processes and improve efficiency.

“Everything is shifting toward data-driven predictive analytics, and statistical research will increasingly benefit Jones & Henry’s modeling services,” says Matt. “I’m excited to use my statistics expertise to enhance the current CAD and hydraulic modeling services at the firm.”

Academic Journey and Career Path

Born and raised in Otsego, Michigan, Matt spent his early years with outdoor adventures, from riding his bike and skateboarding to skiing. His athleticism was evident during high school, where he participated in golf and diving, but his academic pursuits eventually took center stage. After high school, Matt considered various career paths, even considering becoming a club-level golf professional. However, he chose to enroll at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, ultimately transferring to Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology with a focus on Zoology. While at MSU, he also took classes at the Kellogg Biological Station, which introduced him to GIS.

Matt went on to pursue his Master’s in Statistics from Western Michigan University. There, he completed a Graduate Certificate in GIS. After a pandemic-related delay, Matt recently earned his degree, equipping him with the analytical skills needed to thrive in his role.

Throughout his diverse career, Matt has worn many hats, from running a junk removal company during summers in college to working at a landscaping company, a ski resort, a pet cemetery, a research lab, and even the City of Kalamazoo’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Milestones and Interests

In December, Matt and his wife, Amira, celebrated their first wedding anniversary. The couple met at Western Michigan University, where Amira, originally from Egypt, earned a Ph.D. in Education. In their spare time, they enjoy camping, backpacking, playing board games, and spending time with their two beloved cats. Matt particularly enjoys reading, especially fantasy adventure novels.

Matt boasts an eclectic set of what he says are “useless talents.” He can play the guitar (though he humorously notes it’s not his strong suit), ride a unicycle, juggle, and even solve a Rubik’s Cube with impressive speed. “My mom predicted I would be in the circus one day,” he laughs.

Despite his quiet demeanor, Matt is an adventure seeker with a passion for travel and exploration. “I like to be out there, experiencing the world,” he says.

As he settles into his new role at Jones & Henry, Matt expresses enthusiasm for the company’s century-long legacy and its bright future. “Everyone has been super friendly,” he shares, highlighting the supportive environment he has found.

Looking ahead, Matt anticipates that modeling will continue to grow and benefit from the increased use of statistics. “I expect that predictive analytics will become increasingly important in the water and wastewater sector,” he explains. “Using real-world data to optimize systems will be highly advantageous for this industry.”

With a unique blend of skills and experience and a genuine love of exploration, Matt Galovan stands poised to make significant contributions to the engineering field. His journey is just beginning, and it will be exciting to witness the innovative solutions he helps create at Jones & Henry Engineers.

I like to be out there, experiencing the world.
