A former intern’s thoughts about stepping into a new permanent role and what this significant transition means to him.
Since January 2024, Corey Struve has worked as a Co-Op Engineering Intern at Jones & Henry Engineers. However, that changed on May 2, 2025, when he graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science. With a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and a minor in Chemical Engineering, Corey has transitioned into a full-time Engineer I position with the company.
“I am essentially a utility player, doing whatever needs doing on various projects,” says Corey, describing his diverse responsibilities in his new role.
A Turning Point
Corey started college at UC Clermont College and planned to continue after two years there to earn a dual degree in Biology and Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. Driven by a passion for the environment, he dreamed of a career in wildlife research. However, a pivotal turning point came in his final year at Clermont, when he learned about the Chemical Engineering Co-Op program at UC. The opportunity provided valuable hands-on experience and a way to fund his education.
Following his early Co-Op experience with a civil and environmental consultant group, Corey came to Jones & Henry, where he made significant strides in professional development. The experience has allowed him to explore various facets of engineering, particularly in wastewater treatment and civil engineering projects, in which he has developed a keen interest.
One of Corey’s most memorable projects has been a force main upgrade for the City of St. Marys, Ohio. Since its planning phase, the project has challenged him to apply his academic knowledge in a real-world setting.
“Interning at Jones & Henry was a great experience,” he reflects. “The engineers are friendly, willing to let me learn my way, to figure out how to do things without their hovering.”
Beyond the Books
As Corey prepares for the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, his five-year plan includes becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
As a first-generation college graduate, Corey acknowledges the unwavering backing of his family, especially his wife, Olivia. “I couldn’t have gotten through the experience without their support,” he notes, expressing gratitude for the encouragement he receives.
The challenges the COVID-19 pandemic presented tested Corey’s resilience. Like many students, Corey faced feelings of disconnection during the abrupt shift to online learning. Yet, his determination helped him persevere.
Life Outside Work
Corey grew up in Bethel, Ohio, a small town in Clermont County near Hamilton. He attended Bethel-Tate High School, where he met Olivia in their sophomore year.

“Olivia is smart, kind, and pushes me out of my comfort zone,” says Corey.
Corey enjoys being outdoors, soaking up the sun. He maintains an active lifestyle by hiking, going to the gym, and playing soccer. He likes watching NFL football, playing video games, and attending concerts. Friends might be surprised to discover that beneath his ‘jock’ exterior lies a thoughtful lover of literature, particularly complex fiction with unexpected twists.
Corey Struve’s story is a testament to the paths life can take when we are open to change and new opportunities. As he embarks on a new chapter at Jones & Henry, he is well on his way to making significant contributions in engineering and beyond.
