The president of Jones & Henry Engineers reflects on guiding the firm into its next century while honoring its deep-rooted commitment to client relationships and community impact.

Since joining Jones & Henry Engineers in 1998, Brad Lowery has witnessed and facilitated a remarkable evolution in engineering, characterized by a commitment to client relationships and an ownership transition. As the firm approaches its centennial celebration, Brad strives to guide the company into its next century while remaining true to its foundational values.

Brad was born in Toledo, but for the first year of his life, his family lived in Germany, where his father was serving in the US Army. Upon returning to the United States, the family settled in Maumee, Ohio, where they established a home and deep roots.

Brad recalls his childhood fondly, describing a closely knit family—filled with warmth and love—comprising himself and one younger brother. Both of his parents modeled the values of hard work and dedication. His father’s career in the sales of construction materials meant that summers required him to spend long hours at work. For that reason, Brad treasures the memories of family trips during the winter months when his father’s work schedule allowed more flexibility. Those seasonal adventures together became a cherished tradition for their family.

From a young age, Brad has been captivated by understanding how things work. His father played a significant role in nurturing that curiosity, as Brad observed him working on cars in their garage. That early exposure to hands-on problem-solving laid the groundwork for Brad’s future career in engineering. He pursued his passion academically at The University of Toledo, where he earned both a Bachelor of Science (1993) and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering (1996).

Career Path

Brad’s professional journey began at Brunkhorst Engineering, a small surveying and consulting firm in Oak Harbor, Ohio, followed by a role at Matrix Technologies in Maumee. However, it was in May 1998 when he joined Jones & Henry Engineers that his career truly took flight. Brad quickly became known for his sound engineering skills and collaborative approach, ultimately stepping into the role of President in September 2016.

Under his leadership, the firm has celebrated significant milestones, including the growth of all Jones & Henry offices and its upcoming centennial anniversary in 2026. One of the things Brad is most proud of is helping the company transition from the ownership he grew up under to its current owners. “It was, in essence, a transfer of leadership from one generation to another,” recalls Brad.

He is also proud of the numerous current projects in development, which will provide employees with opportunities to grow their skills and enable regional offices to become more self-sustaining. “Our work is part of something bigger than what it appears to be,” he emphasizes, underscoring his commitment to the integrity and impact of engineering within the community.

Brad enjoys working with the talented employees at Jones & Henry and with the firm’s clients. “The work we do is vital,” he says. “And seeing the good that our work does is rewarding.”

Brad believes that people at Jones & Henry would describe him as a sound engineer with an open mind and a steady, calming influence. Acknowledging that his leadership style differs from that of the firm’s dynamic founders, he believes his fair and approachable manner makes him the right personality for this period.

“I see myself as more of a facilitator, helping to bridge the past with the future,” he says.

Personal Life and Interests

Outside of his professional commitments, Brad values family and new experiences. Having recently celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary with his wife, Lynn, he cherishes their three children, Spencer, Jacob, and William, who are now in their 20s.

As they approach the empty-nester stage of life, Brad and Lynn are embarking on new adventures, traveling more, and exploring the world together. Brad is also taking the time to learn German, with the goal of one day visiting the country where he spent his first year.

Brad enjoys traveling, mountain biking, and skiing, which provide opportunities to share adventures with his family and friends. He also enjoys immersing himself in history and historical fiction, which fuels his curiosity and love for exploration.

Reflecting on Legacy

As Jones & Henry Engineers approaches its centennial milestone, Brad reflects on the firm’s legacy. He feels humbled that Jones & Henry has thrived while many other firms have not. He attributes the company’s success to its dedicated ownership group, talented staff, and unwavering commitment to the same core areas of water and wastewater services on which it has always focused.

“I think Harvey Jones would be proud that his namesake company is still going strong, and that many of the clients he served remain with us today,” says Brad. “I suspect he would find the changes in engineering—especially the technology—mind-boggling.”

As Brad reflects on his role as the eighth president of Jones & Henry, he notes that he didn’t initially aspire to the presidency. However, he believes he is well-suited for the role during this pivotal time, as the company transitions from its first century to the next. With his understanding of how engineering has evolved in the past and his vision for the future, he sees himself as an effective bridge between the two eras.

Will there be a 200th anniversary for Jones & Henry? “It’s difficult to say,” reflects Brad. “The odds were stacked against our founders all those years ago—that we would make it to 100 years—and yet here we are today.”

His optimism shines through as he adds, “I suppose we’ll just take it one century at a time.”

In the meantime, Brad is proud to lead the company he loves. His commitment to creating a positive impact in the field of engineering and for the community ensures that the best is yet to come.

The work we do is vital. And seeing the good that our work does is rewarding.
