A history major discovers her place in a century-old engineering firm.
Hannah Birchfield truly understands the historical significance of Jones & Henry’s 100th anniversary. As a former history major, she has a profound appreciation for longevity—one of the qualities that drew her to the firm. Joining Jones & Henry Engineers in early 2026 as a Project Coordinator, Hannah was eager to contribute to such a remarkable legacy, blending her past with her present.
Hannah is originally from Wilmington, Ohio. Her father worked in aviation, which often required the family to relocate for his job. Throughout her life, Hannah has lived in various places, including the eastern shore of Virginia, West Virginia—where she completed her high school education—and Florida, before finally moving to Cincinnati. That diverse background gave her a broad perspective, enriching her approach to her work.
After obtaining her Associate’s Degree at Southern State Community College in 2018, Hannah pursued a Bachelor’s in History at Northern Kentucky University, graduating in 2020. Her educational path laid a solid foundation for her subsequent career.
Hannah began her professional journey as a Deputy Clerk for the Clermont County Municipal Court. After eighteen months in that role, she transitioned to the Brown County, Ohio, Board of Commissioners. During her five years there, she excelled in various positions, including Assistant Clerk, Clerk of the Board, and Secretary/Treasurer. Those experiences were crucial in refining her skills and uncovering new opportunities along her career path.
While Hannah initially envisioned a path in law, her experiences working alongside attorneys reshaped her professional direction. One of her notable roles with the Brown County Land Reutilization Corporation involved collaborating with engineers on extensive projects. That responsibility ignited her passion for this field and prompted her to seek a full-time position that aligned with her newfound interests. It was then that she discovered the opportunities at Jones & Henry.
“I have so much to learn,” says Hannah enthusiastically, as she embraces her new responsibilities, which so far include editing documents for engineers and representing the firm at industry conferences. Each day presents new challenges, and she’s pleasantly surprised by how much there is to learn. “Even if you think you know something well, like Microsoft Office, a new role can reveal many additional ways to use it. It often feels like you’re learning everything from scratch,” she reflects.
Outside of work, Hannah shares her life with her husband, Justin, and their one-year-old son. Justin, an Education State Support Consultant, helps Ohio’s local school districts flourish, embodying the same dedication to community that Hannah champions. Their relationship began through a work connection, showing that sometimes the best opportunities arise by chance.
In her leisure time, Hannah enjoys spending time with friends and family, baking, and being outdoors. She prefers hobbies that require her full attention; for instance, she finds crocheting items such as scarves and baby blankets helps her focus. Additionally, she revels in the joys of motherhood, embracing the challenges and rewards of raising her son.
Hiking and walking in her neighborhood are among her favorite outdoor activities. An avid sports fan, she roots for the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, but to her Cincinnati-office coworkers’ surprise, she also supports the University of Michigan football team. “I think they might add a new interview question after learning that,” she jokes.
As a student of history, Hannah finds it fascinating that Jones & Henry’s 100-year milestone coincides with our country’s 250th anniversary, drawing a parallel between the firm’s legacy and a significant moment in our nation. “The company’s past was one of the things that attracted me to Jones & Henry,” she says.
Hannah Birchfield embodies the spirit of dedication and growth that resonates deeply with Jones & Henry’s century-long legacy. Her unique blend of historical insight and hands-on experience not only enhances her role as a Project Coordinator but also enriches the firm’s community-driven mission. As she contributes to the firm’s legacy while pursuing her own, Hannah represents the next generation of professionals poised to make a significant impact in engineering.
