Taruna Tresha’s story is a remarkable testament to the power of hard work and determination, showcasing not only her professional achievements but also her personal growth and commitment to continuous learning.
Born in Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh, Taruna Tresha grew up in a rich tapestry of culture and creativity. With an estimated population of 36.6 million, Dhaka ranks among the world’s most densely populated cities. The dynamic environment fueled her early love for mathematics and chemistry, laying the foundation for a future defined by innovation and exploration.
In Bangladesh, where professions such as engineering and medicine carry significant cultural prestige, pursuing these careers often provides a pathway to success and the potential to elevate one’s standing in the community. But Taruna found inspiration in her brother, who forged his own path as an industrial and production engineer.
A Journey of Growth
Taruna earned her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the renowned Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 2019. It was also there that she met her husband of six years, Muhiul Muhit, and together they formed a supportive partnership that would nurture both their personal and professional aspirations.
Following graduation, Taruna worked for two years at Decathon Sports Bangladesh. As a Supply Production Leader, she played a vital role in a company that operates more than 1,800 stores worldwide and has Bangladesh as a strategic production base. However, driven by a desire for further education and growth, she and Muhiul decided to pursue graduate studies.
“Most students in Bangladesh go abroad for graduate school, and the United States is known for its quality engineering programs,” explains Taruna. So in 2023, the couple relocated to America to enroll at the University of Toledo. The transition had its challenges; leaving family behind and adapting to a new environment required resilience. However, Taruna quickly found joy in her new surroundings, such as the relatively calm traffic of Toledo compared to the highly congested streets of Dhaka.
Merging Research with Professional Experience
As a full-time student and Graduate Research Assistant, Taruna fully immersed herself in water-related projects, describing her work as immensely fulfilling. Her dedication paid off in December 2025 when she successfully defended her Master’s thesis. Titled “Integrated Assessment of Algaecide Use Efficiency for Cyanobacteria Inactivation in Drinking Water Treatment Residuals and the Resistance of Planktothrix Agardhii to Oxidative Stress,” her research is a significant contribution to the field of water treatment.
Just weeks later, on January 5, 2026, she was one of eight new team members joining Jones & Henry. Taruna felt an immediate sense of belonging among her new colleagues, who embody collaboration and support. “I found what I was looking for here,” she reflects, expressing her enthusiasm for her work and the collective spirit that surrounds her. With clear long-term goals, including passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam and taking on greater responsibilities, Taruna demonstrates her commitment to advancing in her field.
“Water is the common theme in both my research and professional work,” she emphasizes, reflecting both her focus and passion for the vital resource.
Despite her impressive accomplishments, Taruna remains grounded and relatable. She describes herself as a simple, peace-loving person who treasures quality time with Muhiul—whether they are enjoying movies together, spending time with friends, or trying out new foods. Traditional Bangladesh dancing also holds a special place in her heart, showcasing the vibrant blend of folk, it’sal, and classical styles that celebrate her culture and heritage.
At the core of her journey is an unwavering work ethic and genuine love for what she does. “I really enjoy my work, so I spend a lot of time there,” she shares, reflecting her dedication.
Taruna Tresha is more than just an engineer; she serves as an inspiration for many aspiring professionals navigating their own journeys. As she continues to advance in her career, she exemplifies the transformative power of education, the importance of hard work, and the value of staying true to oneself. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the diverse paths that lead us to our goals and the shared human experiences that connect us all.
